Part III

The Carenage.
Independence Day, Continued!

During the break between the military parade and the political speeches, Noga and I sauntered around the Carenage to people-watch and to get a better view of the battleships in port.  The first step was to get through the crowd...

People perched any place that might offer a good view.

Festive folks!

The Carenage.

Britain.

Britain on the left, Venezuela on the right.  And what's that little white ship in front???
Why, it's the SUNLOVER!  Just what every battleship needs: a little SunLover to remind them of the good things in life.

Much to our surprise, a half dozen paragliders came raining down from the sky.

Oops.  This fellow didn't quite make it to land.  Or boat.

No worries, though!  He was retreived by one man and his fearless troupe of trained pothounds in their official rescue zodiac:

Grenadians are known to represent their enthusiasm through their automobiles.

After enjoying some homemade, hand cranked ice cream, we settled near the bleachers on the opposite side of the field to listen to the Prime Minister.

"Dr. Honorable Keith Mitchell."  One outstanding feature of this political speech was how tangible each of the topics of his speech were.  In such a tiny nation, you can really see where your tax dollars go - at least when they get put into public works projects.  (And, yes, I do pay taxes in Grenada!)  Mitchell mentioned nearly ten projects the country is currently focusing on, each of which even Noga and I were generally familiar with.  It was very different from the incredibly vague statements we have become accustomed to from American bureaucracy.

Little Miss Future Prime Minister: practicing her speech!

These characters inhabited the sideline during the speech.

The children could not have been more precious!  They were all decked out in their hand-made best!

On Friday evening, Student Government had a dinner for representatives.  This time, it was held on a two story boat, with a steel pan band and a buffet dinner.

De Band.

After the boat ride, we went to the Coyaba with Josh and Ave.  They introduced us to sumptuous desserts poolside!  YUM!
