Holidays in New York 2007 |
The day after Christmas, we
flew out to New York to celebrate the holidays with Heather's family. Dinner in NY followed by a present exchange with Eric, Jen, and Jeffrey. Visiting family in Connecticut. More presents back in New York with Mom and Dad. Peter unwraps his first big catch fishing off of Lee's boat over the summer: a line and sinker. Hats from Grenada. Dad gets his wrench returned, which traveled all the way down to Grenada to fix Crapzilla's hood. Peter finally gets his private jet! |
Our regular trip to the
wildlife refuge to visit with the song birds. .
The joy of anticipation! Heather gets a Black Capped Chickadee; Lee attracts the more elusive White Breasted Nuthatch with a peanut. |
A walk on the ocean
beach. |
I can't fail to include our
New Year's celebration... playing a hysterical game of Uno. Lee needed some helping hands to hold all of those cards! |
Nancy
and Lee take us to New York's Botanical Gardens to see the holiday
train show. Their unique display exhibits model trains, which
zoom around scale size versions of many of New York's famous
structures...which are meticulously crafted out of plant parts!
Structures represented ranged from famous statues to private homes, to
public buildings...to enormous bridges. All of the exhibits we visited were inside the Conservatory below. The Guggenheim; and the Washington Arch - with the "bug train" zooming under. Hurst-Pierrepont Estate; Poe Cottage Coney Island The statue at Rockefeller Center, and the lovely fountain in Central Park. Radio City Music Hall, and the incomparable St. Patrick's Cathedral. Check out those bridges! Peter holds up the Brooklyn Bridge. A unique view: the trolley traveling over the Brooklyn Bridge. Peter must be one of a tiny handful of visitors tall enough to get his hand over the rail to take a photo! From the deserts to the tropics, we toured the rest of the conservatory as well. |
East Hampton Main Beach at
sundown. |
A quieter visit with
Marian and Don in Connecticut.
|
We took a trip down to
Montauk for a seal walk. Look! A view through the camera...through the spotting scope. Peter and Heather - being seals. Urf! Urf! In the evening, we were treated to dinner at a neighbor's home, where we all enjoyed some fantastic Raclete on a fancy Raclete grill. |
A
visit to Staten Island. Peter arranged to shadow an ER physician
at a NYC hospital for two consecutive days of 12 hour shifts. I
took the train down to the city and met Peter and Marcel on Staten
Island for dinner. Marcel was a wonderful host: inviting us to
stay with him...and delighting me all of the next day by filling the
air with a beautiful array of classical piano music. Peter and Marcel: Olympic-sized goons. They are "Mikes" skeptics, so we go in to check out the menu (pointless at a diner, in my view: they always have everything! It turns out, that at Mikes, there is no checking out the menu. You sit. You order. You don't ask questions. Not even of the waiter, which is tough because they may have everything, but they may call it something else. Heather is satisfied: a diner where I can get a milkshake with a truly scrumptious falafel sandwich. And french fries. We invited a homeless man to dinner to give him a good meal. Oops, I mean...this is our friend, the famous concert pianist. Peter is (probably appropriately) scared by the diner decor, which attacked him at every turn. Mmmm. Marcel took us to a pastry shop for dessert! Dessert brings people together! |
