On
Tuesday, Peter took a break from the school scene to take part in the
La Source Regatta. He sailed on The Ambrosia with Luke and a crew
of six others, two of whom he met the night before. Go, Race, Win! Well, I guess there was plenty of "down" time! A view of campus from the water. The Ambrosia came in second in their class! |
This week, the SOSs spent the afternoon
at Noga's cottage. Shirly is entralled by Josh. Jonathan shares his plans to take over the world...one website at a time. |
On Friday, we went to
Fish Friday at Gouyave! Gouyave is a fishing town north of St.
George's on Grenada's west coast. It is about half way up the
coastline. Gouyave is only about thirteen miles away...but it
took about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there! We left in a
three car caravan.
Gouyave is the town that never sleeps in Grenada. The fishermen here are famous; they catch more fish than anywhere else on the island. Some Gouyave fishermen were even recognized by Queen Elizabeth II with medals to recognize their skills and their contribution to the country. On Friday nights, the people of Gouyave cook up the catches of the day. There's stir fry, fish pizza, fish cakes, jerk marlin, enormous lobsters, kabobs, snapper, baked goods, local juice, beer, rum, music...and homemade ice cream! Local vendors set up tents and tables and ovens and grills and burners to prepare their wares in two narrow alley ways. We encountered a bit of rain, some great foreigners, a few students, and some wonderful local folks. It was such a friendly atmosphere - a great time all around! Two boys who let Peter take their photo. We were unaware that this privilege would cost us $1! The bathrooms were located at the back of a destroyed church. Although the building was dark and destroyed, mercifully, the bathrooms were not! Inside the church. Shrimp stir fry. Oven, baking fish pizza (a metal box with hot coals above and below.) Our new friend from Switzerland - he lives in Gouyave and cooks fish kabobs on Friday nights. Gouyave can attract a rough crowd. Vendors and customers. Most of the gang. Gouyave, the main road. A boat parallel parked on the main road leading into Gouyave. Jonathan...on the bumpy, dark, windy 13 mile journey back to Grand Anse. Perhaps this was just after Peter swerved around the cows in the middle of the road...or maybe it was taken just after we negotiated around the part of the road which is crumbling into the ocean. Who knows? |
On Saturday evening, we
were treated to a truly phenomenal "potluck" hosted by our wonderful
friend, Luke. I place potluck in quotation marks because Luke
provided a hearty meal to all...supplemented by the goods brought in by
others trying to be helpful but greatly outshined by our magnificent
host who made seared tuna, beef stir-fry, vegetables, rice, fresh
fruit, and provided the most sumptuous cheese and wine. I had my
first view of Luke's new apartment, which is lovely and looks over
Prickly Bay. We saw the sun set and then reveled in the
candle-lit atmosphere he created. |
