Six Summer weeks
in the States! |
June 28 - July 1,
2007: New York. When
Peter and I
returned from Grenada, we got to spend a few days in New York with
Heather's
family. My brother and nephew even came all the way down for a
visit! While most of the 28th was spent trying to get to my
parent's house, and then recovering after our travels, we packed as
much as we could into our remaining two and a half days.
DAY ONE, we went on an adventure and headed across Shelter Island to the North Fork and Long Island wine country. Ferry Fun! One of the vineyards
we visited was just gorgeous. Beautiful barns, hundreds of years
old, stained glass...amazing. The same establishment,
coincidentally, subjected us to the worst
tasting wine each of us ever laid our open-minded taste buds on.
Mine: a dessert wine, Peter's: a dry red. It's not as if they
only got one genre wrong.
To add insult to
injury, we thereafter embarked on the most embarrassingly terrible tour
ever. The decidedly uncharming woman chosen to torture us as we
explored the facility managed to labor on for about five minutes
delivering the simple message that, after working at this fine
establishment for six years, she could only surmise that the weather was a factor in determining
how much wine they would produce this year. It got worse from
there. I tried to convince
myself that her grating Long Island accent, which she was inexplicably
able to deliver with a condescending tone, only made her sound more foolish than the
statements she was actually making. No luck. It was painful.
We took a break and went for a stroll through the woods to a little pond. Ahh, rejuvenation. Happily, there were plenty more places to explore! Where? Maybe Manhattan; it's only 150 miles away. Greenport's train museum. Jeffrey and Eric arrived that evening. The first thing Jeffrey wants to do is catch up with grandma! On DAY TWO, we had only one whole day with Eric and Jeffrey, so we made the most of it... Jeffrey's in the pool as soon as any adults are chump enough to follow him in... [No photos of us at the ocean beach. Did I tell you it was a full day??] Lee's gorgeous orchids. Fishing with Captain Lee. Enjoying the waves. Eric's catch: a striped bass. Too small to keep, so it is returned to the sea. Captain Lee's first time back in the saddle since his accident about a year ago. He really puts himself to the test! Peter's first try at deep sea fishing. He catches a sinker and lure. Not bad for a first try! Jeffrey. Try, try again! Peter discovers that reeling in "the big one" takes more effort than it seemed at first...and he's great about taking a good-natured ribbing from the old men of the sea! Peter (eventually) reeled in a good size bluefish. Much to his horror, he caught the poor fish in the eyeball, so the maimed fish was not released. It did make a very delicious dinner, however. On the day of our departure, we left for the airport early and had a brief visit at the Riverhead Aquarium. We spent most of the time visiting our favorite reef tank...favorite ever. It is absolutely enormous, and the quantity, health, and quality of the inhabitants is outstanding. Yowza! My favorite fishies - posing with a good-sized clam. FANTASTIC! (...especially considering the image above displays less than a third of the tank!) |
